The area was not as densely vegetated with tall grass and trees as it is now. This not only allowed for the construction of dwellings and stone walls but also for cultivating crops such as sorghum (mabele) and millet.

After harvesting, the crops that the Bangwaketse grew where stored in grain bins. There were many different methods for storing produce, one of which were grain bins made of intertwined thornbush and poles.

The image on the right was taken in 2018 and shows a grain bin being used in recent times.
