Professor Thapelo Otlogetswe

Professor Thapelo Otlogetswe is a consultant for the Metsemegologolo project and a Full Professor of linguistics and lexicography at the University of Botswana. In 2013 he was awarded the prestigious "Presidential Order of Honour" (PH) being an honour awarded for efficient and devoted service to the Republic of Botswana. Between 2019 & 2020 he was a Fulbright visiting scholar at the University of California, Davis. His research is in lexical computing and corpus lexicography, in particular, that of Setswana. His research includes work on Setswana names, rhyming patterns in Setswana, genre and text type analysis. He has been involved in the development of a multiple Setswana spellcheckers and the compilation of a multi million token Setswana corpus. He has written a number of dictionaries including Tlhalosi ya Medi ya Setswana, 'English-Setswana Dictionary' and 'Poeletso-medumo ya Setswana: a Setswana Rhyming dictionary'. He has also co-authored a Setswana orthography book: 'Mokwalo o o lolameng wa Setswana'. He led the breakthrough translation work on the Setswana Google Search and recently published a Setswana-English-Setswana school dictionary for Oxford University Press (UK). He is a member of the African Association of Lexicography. Prof. Otlogetswe writes a column for Botswana's Telegraph newspaper.
